Meadow

There's no message with this picture - it was a special family moment in Normandy a few summers ago which was very uplifting.

I remember the moment I took one pastel and just let it dance all the way across the page, over the whole of the rest of the picture which I'd already drawn. That's freedom!

Not Alone

Are you aware that someone's looking after you and would stand by you every day? When you discover qualities like loyalty and empathy in a person, perhaps you can feel the special warmth and light that they're sharing with you, even on your darkest days when you're feeling unsure.

Please take a symbol of that warmth and comfort with you when you're facing a difficult day. A small sketch of someone from memory gives you a lovely reminder of what you already know, and if they say even one positive word that you find particularly helpful, just write it down and look at it occasionally.

With a bit of practice you can erase unhelpful or negative comments that have built up like a thick layer of dirt or graffiti, and replace them with positive things. The Calming Quilt started like that - a chance for anyone to say something positive and show that there are helpful, positive people everywhere. Maybe you'd like to join them. You can add something positive if you can spare a couple of minutes. Maybe you're too busy.

This young person is a wonderful friend and he loves his family. He can be a bit sensitive in public though. You would have seen his picture at the exhibition, just behind the tree trunk - here he is on his way to school with a few bright shiny conkers in his pocket ready for a game at playtime if someone will play with him.

One Light

Do you ever see a picture in your mind, but you don't know why? I thought I'd draw it anyway - it brings a feeling of peace. The golden light shines and glows across the mountains and water, enriching what could otherwise be a plain surface. In contrast with the bare branches, the bright green evergreen trees seem to suggest hope and eternity.

The pebbles at the bottom of the page are a reminder about the 'here and now', even though they've been created and shaped over millions of years.

The original of this picture is in the drawing room of a home in Worcestershire - I hope to visit again soon to see it in situ.

Toadstools

"The act of bending low creates a humility - a fresh look at the smallest spores that fall upon the earth, a gratefulness for tender mercies and a knowing that the only way is up.

Wallow in the tiniest detail, investigate the germ of truth. Admire the magic of decomposition and change. Anticipate a spark of transformation as the seed of creativity may sprout and shoot - up, as far as the eye can see."
